Deltamune and Urban Farmer Driving Success and Growth in Africa’s Smallholder Poultry Sector

Small scale farmers across Africa face many challenges such as limited funding, lack of access of information on basic farming practices, proper animal management and disease control.

In response to this, Deltamune and Urban Farmer, supported by Phatisa joined forces to launch Proudly Poultry training series for smallholder poultry farmers to address these issues and support the development of sustainable poultry farming across Africa.

Urban Farmer and Deltamune play complementary and essential roles in advancing the Proudly Poultry initiative, each bringing their expertise to serve the unique needs of smallholder farmers across Africa. Our goal is to ensure that even the smallest-scale farmers have access to the resources and knowledge they need to thrive.

Urban Farmer is committed to enabling competitive poultry and livestock production through the supply of a comprehensive range of livestock feed, health and hygiene products. They bring specialised training services in livestock nutrition, animal health, and farm management to facilitate the production of affordable, safe, and high-quality animal protein in Africa.

We, as Deltamune, a biotechnology company focused on veterinary and public health, enhances this initiative through our commitment to providing locally relevant vaccine solutions for the animal health industry. With a strong emphasis on addressing African diseases and unique conditions, Deltamune brings science-backed tools to protect flocks and improve farm productivity.

The objective of the Proudly Poultry initiative is to empower small scale farmers with training, skills and knowledge they need to run a sustainable and profitable poultry production. By equipping them with the right tools to make informed decisions, the project helps reduce profit losses, improve productivity and support food security.

Between July 2023 and September 2024, we successfully trained over 1500 farmers across 6 countries through 21 training sessions in Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Rwanda. The training sessions included practical demonstrations on feed mixing using Urban Farmer’s U-MIX™ premixes and correct vaccine handling and administration. Following this significant impact, the project has now evolved to Proudly Poultry phase II, affectionately called “Train the Trainer”. The focus has shifted to building a long-term, sustainable model where trainers are equipped to continue uplifting local poultry producers of all sizes.

This phase takes the form of a more interactive training approach, led by a dedicated team working closely with small groups of farmers to ensure meaningful knowledge transfer and the development of practical skills. To date, 3850 farmers have been trained across both phases.

Deltamune and Urban Farmer are proud to continue their shared commitment of working towards a future where every farm thrives, every flock is protected, and food security is within reach for all people.

We look forward to the ongoing impact of this initiative and remain dedicated to shaping the future of animal health and food security across Africa.
