Position Purpose

The Research Veterinarian is a key position in the Research and Development (R&D) department and plays an integral role in numerous aspects of animal health product development. The Research Veterinarian assumes the role of Study Director for assigned proof of concept, post proof of concept and product registration dossier development projects and leads a team of investigators for all stages of product development.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Provision of specialised veterinary, regulatory, and scientific skills and perspectives for R&D projects.
  • Develop, practice, and uphold testing and research guidelines, protocols, and procedures (ethical and regulatory).
  • Planning, implementation, coordination, and management (financial and technical) of all aspects of animal health product research and development, as assigned, utilsing in vitro and in vivo techniques in model and target animal species.
  • Conduct testing, sampling, data collection, documentation, and timely reporting, in the prescribed format.

Specifications

Qualifications:
  • BVSc or equivalent, registered, or eligible for registration with the South African Veterinary Council as a Veterinarian (minimum of ten years post qualification experience required).
  • PhD in related field – preference will be given for candidates with qualifications and experience in the fields of microbiology, molecular biology, vaccinology, immunology, diagnostics, epidemiology of infectious diseases (minimum of three years post PhD experience required).
  • Experienced researcher with a history of project leadership.
  • Previous experience in a senior R&D role.
  • Extensive knowledge of animal ethics.
  • Extensive knowledge of biosecurity principles up to Biosafety Level 3.
  • Knowledge of production animal systems.
Special working conditions:
  • Working conditions will include wearing protective clothing and in an environment where conditions may exceed normal room temperatures.
  • Able to work flexi-hours and overtime (including weekends and public holidays) as dictated by project needs.
